What is in it for Women

  • by

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is poised to have a significant impact on women in African trade, addressing several longstanding challenges and offering new opportunities for economic empowerment.

Economic Empowerment and Business Growth

With the Women and Youth in Trade Protocol now in place, the AfCFTA aims to transform the business landscape for women, particularly those involved in micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). Women, who account for approximately 70% of informal cross-border trade in Africa, will be better positioned to transition from micro to macro businesses. The agreement recognizes the need to build and improve the export capacity of both formal and informal service suppliers, with a focus on MSMEs where women and youth are actively involved. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is poised to have a significant impact on women in African trade, addressing several longstanding challenges and offering new opportunities for economic empowerment.
